The sports market may not be your business, and that’s OK (SBJ op-ed)

Most tech founders are asking the wrong question when it comes to the sports market.
It's not "how do we get into sports." It's "what is sports actually for, and when?"
The short version: sports is a proving ground. It gives you validation, logo value, recruiting leverage, and a story worth telling to investors. What it rarely gives you is a scalable business on its own.
The next market, be it healthcare, defense, direct-to-consumer, wherever the real volume is, has longer sales cycles, more complex buyers, and a higher bar for proof. Sports gets you ready for that, but it usually is not the destination.
