Everyone Cites the $40 Billion Youth Sports Opportunity. Here’s What It Looks Like in the Real World.
Check out my latest op-ed for the Youth Sports Business Report.
The $40 billion market opportunity for youth sports gets cited constantly. NYT, Bloomberg, every pitch deck in the sports industry (even a few we have put together...). It's become the TAM shorthand for a category that deserves a better conversation.
The number isn't wrong. It's just not the important part.
Youth sports isn't a consumer market in the traditional sense. It's identity spending. Parents making decisions that look irrational from the outside and feel completely rational from the inside. One in five youth sports parents believes their kid can play D1. One in ten thinks they have a shot at the pros or the Olympics. Those beliefs drive money, time and attention in ways that most brand categories can only dream about.
